This is the second book in the In English series by the well-known authors Peter and Karen Viney. The pocket-sized students' book contains thirty units. Unit titles include greetings, food and drink, work, and travel. The areas of grammar covered – simple tenses, comparatives and superlatives – are those traditionally contained in an elementary coursebook. There is a lively, colourful and up-to-date feel to the material-which bristles with photographs, cartoons, charts, maps, etc. Some of these pictures are excellent. The book includes suggestions for learner training, with a relevant tie-in to the OUP Genie software. The language covered is graded appropriately for elementary learners, although some language is perhaps a little artificial. In the back of the book are extension exercises, communication activities, transcripts and a highly colourful and well laid-out grammar section, brave enough to include the term ‘aspect'. The other components include two practice books for grammar and vocabulary, which contain a picture dictionary, word games, test-yourself sections and further grammar exercises; an audio CD, teacher's book and class cassettes.
